Balaji Durai’s tryst with photography began unexpectedly with an interest in video games. To his mind, the creation of a parallel reality – where anything was possible – seemed fascinating. This led him to study the art of imaging, and he was soon drawn to the possibility of being able to create a world that embodies this parallel universe.
Balaji Durai completed his extensive year-long Diploma in Photography under the tutelage of renowned photographer Iqbal Mohamed at the Light & Life Academy in Ooty. It was with this teaching that he honed his skills as a photographer, by acquiring a deep understanding of all the technical aspects involved.
After his education, he began his foray into the field of professional photography as an assistant to Mr. Jaideep Oberoi, one of India’s renowned photographers. While he had gained extensive knowledge in the nuances of technical photography and lighting, through the course of his study, it was during his assistantship with Mr. Oberoi that taught him the importance of planning, patience, and meticulousness, when in pursuit of the perfect image. It was Mr. Oberoi’s professionalism and attention to detail that inspired Balaji to augment his knowledge of production, styling and commercial shooting. Having shot for international F&B brands and India’s leading luxury hotels, he gained a deeper insight into the inner workings of the industry.
Since then, Balaji has worked with various clients, growing and perfecting his art. Capable of meeting the standards and exacting demands of the medium, as well as that of clients, Balaji has crafted tailored experiences in a variety of genres across the photographic spectrum.
